Choosing the Right Filling for Your Headboard
Share
The filling inside a headboard affects its comfort, shape and overall feel, but it’s also worth thinking about the environmental impact of the materials inside it. I do not use polyurethane (PU) foam in the manufacture of my headboards and I'm continually looking for ways to make more thoughtful material choices without compromising on comfort, quality or fire safety. I offer two options, depending on your priorities and budget.
Standard Filling

The standard filling is comprised of a compressed polyester foam made from approximately 65–80% recycled plastic bottles. The filling is exceptionally comfortable, with a resilient 'bounce-back' that helps the headboard retain its shape and feel supportive for years to come.
This is produced using a chemical-free thermal bonding process, rather than adhesives. The manufacturing process is free from added chemical resins, glues and formaldehyde-based spray binders. The filling is paired with a polyester batting and a fire-safe calico liner to create a comfortable, supportive and compliant finish. The standard filling is included in the base price of all headboards.
Premium Natural Fibre Filling

The premium filling is made from natural coconut coir bonded with natural latex. The coir is produced from coconut husk, a widely available natural resource, with coconut palms grown across millions of hectares throughout the tropics.
This filling is topped with needled wool and cotton batting, then finished with a wool-safe fire barrier cloth. It offers a more natural, sustainable alternative, combining the structure of coconut fibre with the softness, warmth, and breathability of wool and cotton. The natural fibre filling can be selected at checkout for an additional charge.
I’m working to use more environmentally considerate materials wherever possible. Choosing natural or recycled fibres is one part of that process, alongside making durable, made-to-order headboards designed to be enjoyed for years.
