How to Select the Right Fabric for Your Headboard

How to Select the Right Fabric for Your Headboard

Choosing your fabric

Choosing the fabric for your headboard is one of the most enjoyable parts of creating a bespoke piece, but it can also feel like a bit of a minefield. You may have found a fabric you love, but is it suitable for upholstery? Is it wide enough for your chosen headboard size? Will the pattern work at the scale of the piece, and will the colour and texture look right in your room?

The good news is that you have plenty of choice.  I work with a carefully chosen range of suppliers to curate a varied collection of textured weaves and velvets, with options to suit different styles and budgets.

Pricing varies depending on the fabric you choose, and I'm happy to send free swatches so you can see the colour, texture and quality in your own home before making a decision. This can be particularly helpful because fabrics can look quite different depending on the natural and artificial light in your room and colours do not always translate from screen to screen.

You are also welcome to send your own fabric. The sections below explain what to look for and how to make sure your chosen fabric is suitable for your headboard.

Customer's Own fabric

If you are sending your own fabric please bear in mind the following:

Width:

Most standard width fabrics are appx 138cm wide. This is wide enough to accommodate headboards up to a small double and 1m of fabric will usually be sufficient for the smaller sizes, with more needed if you are adding a pillow stop. Larger sizes will require 2m+ of fabric which can either be taken from the length of the fabric to avoid seams (this will only work with plain or non-directional prints), or have seams attached at either side to widen the fabric.

Weight:

Your fabric will need to be a medium or heavy weight. Very lightweight fabrics will crease and wear quickly.

Safety:

Your fabric will need to comply with UK Furniture Fire Safety Regulations. Please contact me with the fabric you are considering, let me know if it is for domestic or commercial use, and I will be able to advise on suitability.

Please contact me prior to ordering to discuss your fabric choice.
