To Trim or Not to Trim? A Guide to Headboard Trims

Trim can completely change the character of a headboard, from quietly tailored to playful and full of personality. Here are the options to consider:

Flat binding trim detailFlat binding is the simplest and most understated choice. It gives the edges of the headboard a clean, finished outline without adding too much decoration, making it ideal if you prefer a calm and streamlined look. The binding can be made in the same fabric as the headboard, or in a contrasting plain to stand out and emphasise the shape. Flat binding is included in the base price of all headboards.

Pom-pom trim detailPom-pom trim is playful, cheerful and a little whimsical. It works particularly well on children’s beds, guest bedrooms or anywhere you want to introduce a more relaxed and characterful detail. I have a range of colours available, please contact me to discuss the options.

Piping trim detailPiping is the classic choice. It neatly defines the shape of the headboard and can be made in the same fabric for a subtle, coordinated finish, or in a contrasting plain fabric to make the outline really stand out and emphasise the shape.

Ruffle trim detailRuffle trims are soft, decorative and wonderfully expressive. They are a natural choice for more whimsical interiors and work beautifully in maximalist schemes where pattern, colour and texture are encouraged to make an impact.

Box-pleated ruffle trim detailBox-pleated ruffle trim has a more structured, architectural feel than a softly gathered ruffle. The neat, repeated pleats give it a tailored finish, making it a good choice if you want something decorative but still ordered and considered.

There is no right or wrong choice. The best trim depends on the mood you want to create, the fabric you have chosen and how much you want the headboard to stand out in the room.
